Breathing in asbestos is dangerous to your health. It mainly affects the lungs and the membranes surrounding the lungs. Long time exposure to asbestos may cause scar-like tissue in the lungs and the membranes. This disease is called asbestosis.
Asbestosis is typically found in people that were exposed to asbestos. People who have this disease may have difficulty breathing, cough and in very severe cases, they may have heart enlargement.
There are two types of cancer that has been linked to asbestos,
lung cancer and mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the membrane that surrounds the lungs. It may take years for cancer to develop after exposure of asbestos. Studies have shown that other parts of the body may be at risk of developing cancer after breathing asbestos such as stomach, throat, intestines and kidneys. Smoking cigarettes and being exposed to asbestos greatly increases your risk in developing lung cancer. If you have been exposed to asbestos you should really quit smoking.
