A
head injury can range from something as mild as a concussion, to something as serious as a fractured skull or brain swelling (For
Brain Injuries, please see
Brain Injury). Head injuries are usually caused by a blow to the head. In some cases the object striking the head will penetrate the skull and injury will be immediate and obvious. In other cases, the blow may not penetrate the skull or even the scalp; this type of injury is known as a
closed head injury.
A closed head injury is a classification of a head injury. A head injury is a trauma to the head that results in a skull, brain, or scalp injury. A closed head injury is when the injury to the head does not penetrate the skull. Closed head injuries can be the result of any type of accident. A personal injury that results in a closed head injury is sometimes due to a faulty product or negligence or a motor vehicle accident. Many instances of closed head injuries are caused from a trauma to the brain when the head strikes another object, the head is struck with force, and the brain undergoes movement within the skull without visual trauma to the exterior of the head. Closed head injuries are often hard to determine the extent of the injury due to the appearance of little or no harm done because there is not an open wound but there may be a need for physical, cognitive, and emotional treatment.
With any type of head injury, it is crucial that it be diagnosed as quickly as possible. If a head injury remains untreated for too long it may lead to very severe future complications, and may even result in death. Symptoms of a head injury include blurred vision, nausea, memory loss, and increased sleepiness.
Head injury is most common in the young with
Road Traffic Accidents being the main cause. This is significant because any head injury resulting in severe damage to the brain is likely to have a more long term and devastating impact on the young who would otherwise have had a lifetime of work and independent living ahead of them. Any damage to the brain suffered at any age can have severe life changing consequences for the individual and their family.
